The Yorozuya Members-
Sakata Gintoki- Main Character, He is a samurai and took part in the Joi wars against the Amanto when they first invaded, where his prodigious skills made him famous and earned him the nickname “White Devil”. Now he accepts odd jobs to get enough money to pay the rent.
He has silver hair and a natural perm, usually wearing a black and white kimono. When it comes to his personality, he is shown to usually be rather unenthusiastic and aloof. On several instances, however, he has shown that he cares about the people he loves, including to the point of risking his life to save them.
Gintoki's name may be a reference to either Kintarou or Sakata no Kintoki.
Shimura Shinpachi- He works with Gintoki supposedly to learn the way of the samurai, but more often than not it just seems like he does what he’s told to get enough money to pay the rent. He is the leader of the “Otsu-chan’s Imperial Guard”, a fan club for pop-singer Terakado Tsu.
Shinpachi’s name is a reference to both (real life) Shinsengumi member Nagakura Shinpachi and comedian Shimura Ken.
Yamamoto Kagura-an amanto from the powerful Yato Clan. She is extremely pale and has to carry around an umbrella to protect her from the Sun, an umbrella that also doubles as a weapon and a shield.
Sadaharu-Kagura's Giant pet. Sadaharu was left in front of Gintoki’s in a box and is named after Kagura’s first pet, a rabbit, which she killed while she was having a nightmare.
The Shinsengumi
Kondo Isao- the leader of the Shinsengumi. He can be described as a good person, honourable and good-hearted. He has brown, spiky hair and the beginnings of a goatee. He is often referred to as a gorilla by others.
Kondo's name is a reference to Kondo Isami, one of the leaders of the real life Shinsengumi.
Hijikata Toushirou- the Vice Captain of the Shinsengumi and is regarded as the Shinsengumi's most feared member.
He is also constantly under the threat of being killed by Okita Sougo, who tries any method to permanently remove Hijikata from the Shinsengumi so that he is able to take his place of Vice-Captain.
Hijikata also has a major obsession with mayonnaise.
The name "Hijikata" was taken from the Director-General/Vice-Captain of the original Shinsengumi, Hijikata Toshizou.
Okita- a member of the Shinsengumi, probably their best swordsman. Even so, his weapon of choice is usually a bazooka. He has brown hair and a sweet, cute face, almost and always wears the Shinsengumi uniform. He often takes naps during work, during which time he wears a distinctive mask.
Okita’s name is a reference to real life Shinsengumi member Okita Souji.
The former Joi-
Gintoki- look in The Yorozuya Members.
Katsura Kotaro- Katsura is known as “Zura”, a nickname he dislikes, and he is therefore always correcting people and telling them to call him “Katsura”. Katsura is an old companion of Gintoki’s during the Joi wars. After the Amanto took over the shogunate, Katsura kept on fighting them and he has surrounded himself with a band of followers with the same goals. he is a wanted terrorist for his attacks on the Government.
His name is based on that of Katsura Kogoro and, according to some sources, Kido Takayoshi.
Takasugi Shinsuke- an old companion of Sakata Gintoki during the joi wars, together with Katsura and Sakamoto and, in fact, they went to school together. He wears an eye-bandage and is also easily recognized by his purple, whitch a butterfly pattern kimono.
Like Katsura, he too fights the current regime together with the rest of the Kiheitai. Unlike Katsura, however, he is only interested in destroying, rather than saving, the post-war world, which he sees as rotten and corrupted.
Takasugi's name is a reference to Takasugi Shinsaku.
Sakamoto Tatsuma is an old companion of Gintoki's during the Joi wars. After the war, he travelled to space and became a space traveller and merchant, where he became very successful
Sakamoto has a very easy-going nature. He is also very optimistic and always looks on the bright side of things.
Sakamoto's name is a reference to Sakamoto Ryoma.

Plot:
The story takes place in Edo (known today as Tokyo because of the name change in 1868), Japan, which has been taken over by aliens called Amanto since the late Edo period. The samurai of Japan have fallen, and the Amanto placed a ban on carrying swords in public. The story focuses on an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, his (partial) apprentice Shinpachi Shimura, and a teenage alien girl: Kagura. All three are "free-lancers" who search for work in order to pay the monthly rent, which usually goes unpaid anyway.
